Live performance of Violin – A great concert

This the right time for many of the orchestra-shows, to be on live on behalf of Vinayaka chathurthi.

On September 4, around 8pm in Mallikarjuna temple (Near APS college ground) the program is scheduled to happen.

I got a great opportunity to see live concert of the great artist of violin Vidvan Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan. I was in fact bit excited to attend.

The stage was occupied with all old aged spirits- I should call them so. They are full of spirit to give their best performance. All the members of the troupe are Vidvans in their own way (Tabla, Ghatam, Mridangam etc). Except the Violinist, everybody was seen on the stage. His appearance followed a big applause.

The program started with “Vaataapi Ganapathim Baje”. The next “Saamaja varagamana”.
He was playing with other artists, like taking to very low pitch and to high pitch and allow them show their talents with him. I was stunned to see that he didn’t remove his hand from violin for about more than 20 min. Even at that age, the way he was playing can’t be explained.
The hold on the instrument was too good. He was too much.
Later it continued with different Keerthanas & Devara namas. “Raghuvamsha..” was too good.

In one of the song i.e “Himagiri tanayehe”, he mixed all possible sort of combination i.e in between he played “Aadisidaleshodaa..”, “Snehithane…(i.e Chupkese from Sathiya film)”, “Kehta Hai Mera Dil (from Jeans), Radio sound (beginning one) and few other songs. While starting the each one, he came back to “Himagiri tanayehe” again. That was the great thing. Later he played “Alaipayude (one of my favourites)”. The list goes on and on but my time was up to be back. I wanted to hear more but can’t help for that.

Han.. Forgot to mention about this. I can say it’s a sort of disturbance in the middle of the concert (they know nobody will remain to see if they keep at the end)

One elderly person was called on the stage. They were planning to honor him for his work for that association.
MC (don’t know the name of the person) called Irannayya (the actual name is Hirannayya – MC spells like that) to come on to the stage. Hirannayya came on the stage and did namaskara to all (like a political man).. He was still doing the same. MC got irritated (I felt) or hurrying up and asked him to come to the other part of the stage where a chair (common one) is kept. They chair is decorated with some cloth (looks bit old from distance). MC asked him to sit down on this chair and told the history (Irannayya’s great work bla bla bla stuff). At the end he asked Violinist (it was surprise for him) to honor this Irannayya (What a great culture..– Calling such a great person from TamilNadu and asking him to honor the person from here..Don’t have the inch of common sense!!! It’s like calling guest to serve in our home). I don’t know what happened to violinist he didn’t turned up (either he didn’t understood what MC told in Kannada or not willing to honor the person). I felt that was the good lesson for them. Different people were called to give different things for honored person i.e a Peta, Garland, pen to keep track of the accounts (funny) and MC presented a small Ganesha idol. MC was very proud to give that it seems.

Later MC called one more person on stage to honor. That guy didn’t turn up. MC had given the mike to Irannayya (I was literally irritated by this time hearing his pronunciation) to cover the time. Though Hirannayya is more than 75, he spoke with Great Spirit (Talking like Dr. Raj - Nothing is mine all things are yours). He didn’t forget to tell jai Karnataka mate and Jai Baharat...(hummm) at the end.

Now the mike again came to MC (I was feeling bad). Now he asked people on stage to that quickly honor Violinist (Yellaru ottige bega bega Kunnakudi avrigi Aara(Haara) Aaki(Haaki)).
One gentle-man went to put peta on Violinist, MC announced that time, “Please, go that side and put peta so that you will also come in photo” (Is it neccessary to announce this too??? I couldn’t control myself at this time).
The drama ended and again the concert continued immediately. Thank God. Anyway I enjoyed this too.
A great evening…. My heart filled with satisfaction.

I like Kunnakudi's music and have attended couple of his live concerts. I even have a casette here which I play too often. I am a big fan of his music. Nicely written.

The story of 'Irannayya' is very funny. Liked it though.
